Shin
This is a wonderful way to watch this series whether you have seen it already or not. The price point is comparable to completing the series on DVD, however you will have twice as many discs, and will have to wait longer(the DVD releases have a head start).

The UMD has excellent PSP presentation. When you have selected Video, UMD on the PSP menus, you are treated to a series themed wallpaper, upbeat trip hoppish music, and action sequences playing in a small window.

Once you enter the UMD, you get three trailers which is nice. They range from mecha, to thriller, to bizarre comedy. They all look and sound great, but the widescreen shows have full screen trailers(4:3 and with black bars on top/bottom and left/right).

You get your usual two audio tracks with subtitles available, and both are excellent.

The image quality is excellent and really shows how well animation works on PSP. This series is in a widescreen format originally and looks like they nailed the PSP screen format perfectly.

If you have 1.5 firmware you might notice this, but with 2.0 firmware, the transition from the UMD menu to the actualy show is glitchy. The series name is supposed to slide down and fade to black, but it freezes with 2.0.

Azizadah
I love this series, but Geneon’s prices are outrageous. They have long ripped us off with over-priced DVDs and they are doing the same with UMDs. Why would I pay over $10 for two episodes?

i’d say that dave prochnow is the biggest goof online n in no way should anyone in the psp community buy this book, you aint missing anything. alot of the info can be read in the manual u get with your psp. just useless thru and thru.

I mean I bought it and wish I hadn’t. It only scratches the surface of what can be done with the PSP. Even though I bought this book used I am still disappointed. It is not at all what I expected.

It is basically a “How To” for connecting things to the PSP. It takes up 50% of the book with pics showing how to do useless things with the other products rather than the PSP. Case in point, connecting the Apple iPod to the PSP. Why would you do that? Oh ya, because the PSP can already play MP3′s and you just wanted to do it because you could. Dumb.

I wish I would have never bought this book.

I have to agree with the other customer reviews. This book was a huge disappointment! Dave Prochnow’s book is erratic, confusing, and deficient of practical application. His writing was hard to follow and at times made me wonder why I paid $24.95 to read the ramblings of a person with ADD. In fairness his suggestions on PSP websites and selection of accessories were decent. However, the book lacked goof-proof, insider’s guidance!

Swordfish Umd Psp John Travolta

When the DEA shut down it is dummy corporation operation codenamed SWORDFISH in 1986, they had generated $400 million which they let sit around; fifteen years of compound interest has swelled it to $9.5 billion. A covert counter-terrorist unit called Black Cell, headed by the duplicitious and suave Gabriel Shear, wants the cash to help finance their raise-the-stakes retribution war versus international terrorism, but it’s all locked away behind super-encryption. He brings in convicted hacker Stanley Jobson, who only wants to see his daughter Holly again but can’t afford the legal fees, to slice into the government mainframes and get the money.

Carnegie
Ignore the Amazon editorial review and all the other reader reviews. I don’t want to spoil this movie for you by telling you too much about the plot or describing in perfect detail some of the best scenes in the movie but what I will tell you is…
1) Yes, it’s true, Dominic Sena’s last directorial effort Gone In Sixty Seconds was a MAJOR dissapointment BUT SWORDFISH ISN’T!!! It’s a good movie!
2) Travolta is good
3) Halle Berry is good
4) Don Cheadle is underused and
5)Hugh Jackman is a major star in the making.
6) The now infamous scene of Halle Berry topless was probably unnecessary and perhaps gratuitous (but hey, she’s a good looking woman with a good body). Sorry, did I say good? I meant great…but if this is the only reason why you’d watch this movie, then you really do need to get a life.
7)This was one of the better films of the summer.
8)It is neither formulaic nor does it lack ambition. Unlike most movies of this genre it challenges it’s audience to excercise the old grey matter and it’s got a half-decent twist.

Sure it has some faults, like did they run out of money for FX when they shot the scene of the bus landing on the roof? And the change of pace and edit from past events back to present was badly thought out and jarred a bit. BUT you know what? I liked this movie and the directorial set-piece that everybody wants to spoil for you by describing it to you in every detail is excellent. I only wish the moviemakers had been able to take that extra step and made a great rather than good movie. Buy some popcorn, kick back and enjoy this one on a Saturday night at home in front of the TV…

I must admit that the experience was incredible and during the scenes that John Travolta was firing to the FBI agents and Hugh Jackman was driving, it was like that I have been on the street, in the middle of the crossfire.

If you want to experience the blu-ray difference, I strictly recommend the movie. That’s how you see the development from DVD to Blu-Ray.

A must for your collection.

Primarily for the Skype functionality, a microphone is onboard along with a reduced glare 4.3″ screen. Its a given that fingerprints will still be a continued issue for the PSP line. Thankfully, the age old problem of ghosting has yet to appear on my new PSP 3000.

One of the sweeter features now is an upgraded (AV) video output support. Owners can now operate their systems with regular (NON HD) TV. I suggest buyers pick up a good composite or component cable. With the usual collection of great games, improved graphics is a major plus.

As with all previous models, control buttons layout are very much like the classic Play Station. One area of concern is that load times for the UMD (Universal Media Disc) seemed to drag a bit. Its a given that purchasing the kit which includes the proprietary MS Duo Card is more cost effective in the end. Its obvious that Sony missed the boat when it went with its own proprietary format instead of the more widely used and less costly SD standard.

Even though Wi-fi capable, the unit is outfitted with possibly the slowest version (802.11b) on the planet. It powers up via a 5 volt ac adapter or USB. Video playback is great as long as you copy your favorites on the memory stick Duo Card. Going any other way is definitely a slow dragged out process. When it comes to television, Sony’s own version of Slingbox allows for free tv viewing.

This PSP won’t get confused with your IPOD anytime soon but music play is generally good. Another added feature is that it will even support music art. If one is going to display photos on the PSP I strongly suggest compressing your files. Photo display can be via slide show or singles.

Of note, the PSP is also a web browser. However, its hit and miss for flash. Streaming internet radio via Shoutcast is a freebie. PSP offers a regular schedule of firmware updates. As with the earlier editions, via a network or the internet the unit can pick up audio, video and photo files that are stored on a PS3. The PSP 3000 comes with the standard 1200 mAh rechargeable battery. Battery life runs almost a full 5 hours whether one is gaming or watching a movie.

Necessary accessories such as the Memory Stick Duo card, protective screen cover, headphones and a carrying case are not included. Not all PSP headphones are compatible with the PSP 3000. When purchasing headphones read the specs carefully.

Even without the included accessories, the PSP 3000 still brings it on. I would definitely recommend this model as a gift or as a personal purchase. After all, it is Play Station.

Agarwal
I’ve spent the last few weeks doing some research on which to buy, and finally caved and bought a PSP GO. I ended up returning it and buying the PSP 3000, and here’s why:

1. Physical comfort.

I’ll admit it, I’m a sucker for things that are new and look cool (sometimes at the cost of utility.) Plus, things that slide are undoubtedly awesome. Sony knew that when they made the GO. The problem is the “cool” and “new” factors are outweighed by the smaller screen and compressed controls. Also, I thought it would be better having the controls on the bottom wh en gaming, and have a less distracting view when watching movies since the buttons would be hidden, but I was wrong. The buttons on the side are far more comfortable, convenient, and surprisingly natural. The bigger screen actually does make a difference, and the L and R buttons just feel more natural this way.

One thing to note about the screens (both have the same resolution):

They’re good, but not great. The problem is we’re spoiled now. If you have a smartphone (which if you don’t, I feel like I don’t even know you,) you’ll be disappointed when you see some things on the screen that are just so clearly pixelated. I’m going to post a video review in a bit and you’ll see what I’m talking about.

2. Digital games vs. UMD (the names of the physical discs that the 3000 uses.)

For those who don’t know, the PSP GO uses digital games exclusively. There are no physical discs. You download games from the Playstation Network store. It’s convenient since you don’t have to carry discs around, and you have immediate access to a huge selection.

The 3000 uses physical discs (UMD) as well as downloads. Now, carrying discs around is definitely a hassle (even though they’re only about 2 inches by 2 inches), but the benefit is that you can buy used discs for very cheap, an option not available with the digital only GO.

***IMPORTANT TIP***

At GameStop, you can buy used PSP UMDs for cheap, and they have a great return policy. For any reason, you can return any used game within 7 days for a full refund, to any GameStop in the country. If you don’t have your receipt, you have to return it to the location where you bought it.

***/IMPORTANT TIP***

3. Price

This is often overlooked but I think very important. The retail price for the GO is $250, which is pretty crazy given that you can often find a PS3 for $250, or at worst, $300. Given that you can get a full system for 20% more, it’s hard to justify spending that much for considerably less functionality.

Now on Amazon you can get the GO go for $200, plus tax and such leads to about $215. On NewEgg, you can get the PSP 3000 with Madden 11, free shipping and no tax for $170. So you’ll end up paying at least $45 more, but for what?

You are really spending $45 more for no reason. And with this extra $45, comes the responsibility to spend even more on games that you buy directly from the PlayStation network as opposed to used UMDs.

4. Memory Stick

***IMPORTANT TIP***

If you do decide to get a GO, it uses something called the M2. If you buy it from Amazon, you get a 4GB for $15 and it comes with an adapter for the Memory Stick Duo:

http://www.amazon.com/Sandisk-Memory-Stick-SDMSM2-4096-Package/dp/B00107AO58/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1281896190&sr=8-1

If you buy a 3000, it uses the Memory Stick Duo, which if you buy by itself, a 4GB will run you ~$19:

http://www.amazon.com/Sony-Memory-Stick-Flash-MSMT4G/dp/B0013AX2JM/ref=sr_1_2?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1281896267&sr=1-2

I know it’s only a matter for $4, but I thought that was interesting (I need to get out more) and worth mentioning.

***/IMPORTANT TIP***

5. Fun level

They’re both freaking fun. Sony knows what they’re doing, the games are great, the devices are both portable and easy to take around, and keep you entertained for hours. Either way, you’ll love what you bought.

6. WRAP UP

I ended up with a 3000 and I’m happy with it. I couldn’t justify spending nearly as much money as I would on a full system without getting much in return. And the ability to buy used games for considerably less was also hugely attractive. Finally, the better placement of the controls really won me over.

Enjoy!

It is slim, sleek and bright. Either if you are new to PSP or upgrading from PSP1000, this one has a lot to offer. Inbuilt microphone, bright LCD scree, better battery life, smoother inputs and more ergonomic placement of master controls. This is a very well designed machine, if you have checked the past PSP history they have very long life. Perfect for both adults and young ones. 08 had more than 10 block busters for PSP. 09 is promising to be another great one with more goods coming from Japan and EU. Most important of all Little Big planet and Resistance Retribution. All the PSP2000 accessories are compatible with PSP3000, every thing from case to car chargers. As with PSP2000 this one sport a larger RAM. With additional hardware resources it supports a wide variety of media including 720x480p H.264/MP4 DVD quality movies, wma, mp3 and more.

Now one important warning. Memory Stick Duo is one of the most pirated card in black market. Pay up and buy from trusted vendors. Cheap cards sold in ebay and other 3rd party vendors are slow and less reliable. When you put the card in any device like PSP check for magic-gate info. If it says magic-gate: unknown, return it back. You are better off buying Lexar or other cheaper card from reputable vendor than buying fake card. Dont promote fake sellers, if you find any fake seller report to Amazon and authorities.

This Jak & Daxter game for the PSP was developed by High Impact Games, the same developer who created the two awesome Ratchet and Clank games for the PSP. But something went amiss with The Lost Frontier. It doesn’t even come close to matching the quality of the two Ratchet and Clank games, and it’s hands down the worst Jak & Daxter game to date. Not to say that it’s unplayable; it can be quite entertaining in places. But the game as a whole suffers from a lack of polish and sloppy gameplay mechanics.

The biggest problems with the game are the camera and using the d-pad to change weapon modes and eco powers. The camera is programmed to switch into preset positions at certain parts in the levels, and this often causes problems. It would have been much better if High Impact had just allowed the player total camera control at all times. Let the player screw it up, not the game itself. The problem with the d-pad is that there are simply too many functions mapped to it, and it’s too awkward to use in the heat of combat. The player uses the d-pad to do three things: change weapon modes, change eco powers, and activate an eco power. Having to take your thumb off the analog nub to do this means Jak is a sitting duck to attacking enemies. A much better solution would have been to have a quick select system as in the Ratchet and Clank games. One button pauses the game and brings up a quick select ring with the available weapon modes and eco powers. The player chooses with the analog nub and quickly resumes gameplay. The L and R shoulder buttons could have been used to switch back and forth between a weapon ring and an eco power ring. How somebody didn’t think of this is baffling.

Another annoying problem is that the game does not display Jak’s weapon mode and eco power at all times. The only time that information gets displayed is when the player changes weapon modes and eco power. Every time the player begins engaging an enemy, you have to fiddle with the d-pad to see what abilities you have equipped. It’s just a big pain in the butt.

The sky combat is fun, but way too easy. The game practically just gives the player everthing. Rather than being the grandiose Jak and Daxter game I was hoping for, The Lost Frontier is little more than a few day’s diversion. Worst of all, there’s no Ashelin: an unforgiveable crime. Rent this one, or wait until it drops in price.

I was hoping for the game to be on PS3 with great graphics like Ratchet and Clank. Then when I found out that Naughty Dog was not producing this game I had a feeling the game would not be as good and I was right. The graphics are OK for the PSP, but lacking for the PS2. The story line is OK. The camera is not very good. No first person view. I’m not enjoying this game as I did with past games. I hope Naughty Dog will reclaim J&D and give us the great games we have come to expect.

The Bad: Repetitive, hard, feels old

Ahhh…good `ol Jak & Daxter are back at it again in their first return since Jak 3 in 2004. Lost Frontier is a great addition to the series and has a lot to offer. For starters, you will notice how beautiful the game is in the traditional J&D art style with great controls, story, and voice acting.

The Dynamic Duo is trying to stop the evil space pirate Skyheed from taking the Eco core and using it to destroy the world. With some great plot twists this 6-8 hours adventure will leave you hooked and guessing at every second.

When it comes to Jak & Daxter games it all boils down to combat and platforming, but Frontier adds some mini games in the bunch that are very fun and satisfying. Jak and use his for guns and shoot away, but he also has an array of melee attacks that can be upgraded. There are quite a bit compared to previous games, and you can easily mix up shooting with combat to keep yourself out of danger. Another great addition are the Eco powers you pick up such as a burst you can shoot, slow down time, a shield, teleportation, and even Eco crystal manipulation. Sound awesome? Well most of them are passive, but there are quite a few and it keeps things mixed up.

The biggest addition is being in the air almost most of the time. You get three different planes and you can buy and upgrade weapons, armor, and other mods with the scrap you find from shooting down enemy planes. Daxter can actually attach to planes mid flight to initiate a mini game so he can tear off mods to add to your collection instead of having to buy them. This mini game is fun, but gets tiring very fast. Flying the actual plane is easy since the controls are great, and being able to fire three different weapons to your custom liking.

Like in all Jak & Daxter games there are useless tidbits of side stuff you can too that I always found useless. In the beginning of the game you can do this hunt and seek Precursor orb thing, but I could never figure out what you do with all those orbs. You find them throughout the game, but never does anything come up where you can use them. Another useless tidbit is in the open world (which by the way is huge) you can shoot dark eco crystals and take them to this statue thing and it gives you precursor orbs…makes no sense, but I guess it’s for hardcore fans. Another mini game that is new is Daxter now finally gets infused with Dark Eco and gets put in a top down mini game.

My biggest gripe about this game is the difficulty. The game can be so hair pulling, PSP throwing frustrating and this includes the boss fights. You can die so easily in the game and the enemies have so much health no matter how much you upgrade it really gets tiring, and that’s the problem with this game. It gets tiring after a couple of hours and starts to lose its charm. The game is pretty much the same just destroy this ship or go down here and beat up these guys. There are some puzzles throughout, but they aren’t anything really all that special.

Lost Frontier is worth maybe a weekend rental, but it is great and five years was way too long before a new J&D game sprouted. I’m hoping the duo can make it to the PS3, but the formula feels almost 10 years old and needs a major upgrade.

Kratos? Story
The God of War franchise tells the tragic and violent story of the warrior Kratos and his dealings with the gods. The ancient world would in the end both praise and damn the illfamed ?Ghost of Sparta? as the mortal who slayed a god, but long before his battle with Ares, Kratos sought absolution from his past sins by pledging himself as a champion to the gods. These brutal crusades in the name of Olympus became legendary, but would have far-reaching consequences. In Chains of Olympus Kratos is pushed to the edge as he is ordered by the gods to traveling to the very depths of the underworld after the world plunges into darkness. There he must face the most dire creatures of Greek mythology and is forced to choose amidst his own personal salvation and saving the ancient world from sure destruction. It is a choice that will shake the immortals from their perches on Mt. Olympus.

God of War’s Epic Gameplay Comes to the PSP
PlayStation Portable has always been head and shoulders above it is contenders in the handheld market when it comes to processing power, and in God of War: Chains of Olympus the PSP platform may just have reached it is most eminent level to date. Packed with features like dramatic camera angles, epic set pieces, cinematic cut scenes, stirring audio and seamless fast action gameplay, formerly only available on console platforms Chains of Olympus binds players to the game?s epic adventure, disregarding where they are when they join in the action.

Combat Moves, Both Old and New
Nearly as defining as the name of Kratos itself, the trademark sweeping attack moves of the ?Ghost of Sparta? using his weapon of choice the ?Blades of Chaos,? epitomizes all God of War games and Chains of Olympus is no exception.

Although overall the PSP has less buttons than the PlayStation 2 controller, developer Ready at Dawn Studios has managed to integrate almost all of the attack moves and combining moves from former games in the series into this new project. This continuity in gameplay not only provides a seamless intro into the game for veteran players, but a tame learning curve for players new to the series. Add to this new brutal combat moves and an further and added upgradable weapon and you have a combat system that will engage players at all levels.

Exploration and Puzzle Solving
From the bright gates of Attica to the darkest dungeons of Tartarus, Kratos? traveling and your own will take you through the dark and brutal world of Greek mythology. Here not only will your skill with the Blades of Chaos be tested, but your wits as well.

As you explore the dangers of the ancient world, players will have to be prepared to use their navigational achievements as they press on through labyrinths of challenging puzzles. Some may be simple tests at controlling the game?s surroundings to your advantage, while others much more difficult also requiring precision timing of moves, but each will be dissimilar and test you in new ways.

An Evolution in Franchise History
More than just a missing piece in the history of the God of War franchise, Chains of Olympus also serves as an evolutionary link amidst the roots of the God of War franchise and it is future. Originally developed for PlayStation 2, the future of the franchise is slated to make it is arrival on PlayStation 3 in the form of the highly prevised God of War III in the not too distant future. Not only is PlayStation Portable designed to work in unison with PlayStation 3 in a great deal of ways, but both long-time fans and newcomers to the series who choose to watch and play Chains of Olympus cautiously may very well pick up clues as to the direction the franchise will be heading in with God of War III.

Regardless, whether you find yourself playing for the current chapter in Kratos? saga or preparing yourself for the battles to come on the PlayStation 3, God of War: Chains of Olympus is a will have to have title for any current proprietor of a PSP or those taking into account getting in the handheld game with one.

B Cole
When I saw that I had a package yesterday, I opened it up…and then nerd glee ran through my hands to my arms and then to my heart. Kratos had arrived.

I ran to my shop (actually I walked as fast as a grandma around a shopping mall) to open this tantalizing package of war. Screw work!! Actually I cant do that because I’m in Iraq and I have to get things done to help protect the troops. But once I was done with all the work for the day I popped the game in the PSP and hit the power button.

When I began to play, I couldnt believe the graphics. The PSP is seriously a PS2 in your hands. The game is just beautiful. The levels are nicely done. They even have the camera effect where it pulls out very far just to show you how small you really are compared to your surroundings. Your chains graphical effects look really good and even better as you upgrade them. Even the graphics for little things look great…for instance…when you open a chest under water, the chest begins to release thousands of tiny bubbles while you struggle to open it. I just thought that was a nice little touch.

The gameplay is incredible. Kratos is extremely easy to control. I’m just amazed at how fluid he moves. Bashing baddies…lifting them in the air…grappling them back onto the ground..and then finishing them off is nothing but a few well pressed buttons mashes. Not hard at all. And I’m not talking about the button sequence fighting either. Speaking of those, there are some really good ones in this game.

The sound is sharp and pleasing. The musical score can really put you in a mood to kill every living thing around…but then make you want to stop and smell the ashes of a burning hades. If you’ve played part 1 or 2, then you know what to expect with the sound effects, and it’s here also. Sound great in my Bose Earbuds.

I have only a COUPLE of gripes about the game. I’m not completely done with it, but I can tell the game is going to be short. That’s going to be a downer because I really like this game and just dont want it to end for at least 2 week..heh. Another gripe I have is that the game froze up on me once. Only once..so hopefully not again. Just make sure you save every time you get the chance.

Something that isnt a gripe, but a ‘Just so ya know’, playing on Normal is pretty dang easy. There are 4 modes…Easy, Normal, Hard, and God (which is greyed out at first). If you are pretty experienced with the game, I’d go with playing Hard.

Something parents should think about when pondering if they should get this game for their youngin. This game is based during when Rome was the hot spot. So when you see some of the female Gods, usually they are topless. Also there is a scene where Kratos frees two topless women and well…gets to have sex with them. You dont actually see it, but they show a vase or something rocking around while you hit a series of buttons to pleasure them both. Funny if you are older, but maybe not funny for parents with children.

All in all, I recommend this game completely for your PSP. It is definitely in my top 5 games for the PSP. That would include Ratchet and Clank, FF Tactics, Burnout Legends, and I dont have a 5th one yet..(it’ll probably be the new Final Fantasy).

UPDATE:

Well after beating the game about an hour after posting this review, I will say it’s definitely a short game. Also make sure you stay for after the credits. Well…you’ll have to because you cant skip cut scenes (which I LOATHE that you cant do it in any game).

Durham
God of War stands as one of Sony’s best original franchises, and now the vengeance-driven Kratos and his deadly chains have come to the PSP. Fans of the series will also be more than happy to know that God of War: Chains of Olympus stands as the best action title to hit Sony’s portable system yet, as it nearly flawlessly brings everything that has made the God of War series so good, and packs it into one small disc. Taking place before the events of the original God of War, Chains of Olympus finds Kratos as general serving the gods, and also finds him struggling with obeying his orders, or doing what he feels he should. Undoubtedly the best looking game to hit the PSP yet, God of War: Chains of Olympus retains the excellent production values, addictive combat, tight controls, solid puzzle elements, and unlockable extras that will keep you glued to the game. The only real downside to Chains of Olympus is that as a whole, the game is too short. This one flaw is acceptable though, as Chains of Olympus boasts a brilliant score, more fantastic voice acting, and some dynamic action sequences that are easily the best to be seen on the PSP yet. All in all, God of War: Chains of Olympus is a more than welcome debut of Kratos on the PSP, and is by far the best action game to hit the PSP yet. Needless to say, if you own a PSP, God of War: Chains of Olympus is an absolute must own, and the definition of “killer app”.

The production value is through the roof. I have never played a handheld game that was of this caliber, if it were twice as long I would call it the single greatest achievement on any portable system.

From the moment I started the game, I was emotionally involved and I did not want to put the game down. I had not played the other GOW games, so this was all new to me… and I was hooked. The action was intense, but the puzzles were never complex.

The few issues that I had were with the length of the game, and the thumb pad, some fights hurt!

If you have a PSP, you have to play this game… I hope this is the harbinger of the future for the PSP, because it proves that Sony’s little console is quite something!

Abouseda
well I am here to say this game definately does more justice than a 1 star!! With all the capabilities that is offered in the game, how could it be? I enjoyed the game, and actually was suprised by the game play on the PSP, the graphics are more enjoyable than the PS2 version, but I would say the realism it not… in the PSP version, I don’t like the fact that it is so easy to make shots, players go to the hole anytime they wish, and it’s extremely hard to steal in the game… but like I said, it really is enjoyable to have all those options at the palm of your hand; shot out is added which I have never played before, and it seemed I was stuck on that challenge even before I experienced playing a real game… bottom line is the game is good, damn good for PSP, I just hope EA can make some slight adjustments towards next years edition.

When I saw this game and all it has evolved the genre I wanted to try it.
Sport games doesn’t evolve very much, only some variations on the rules.
The upgraded graphics, the new additions of sound fx, audio commentary, camera angles and the extras makes a great game for casual and hardcore gamers. I read that the console versions have other features that the PSP doesn’t but the portability convenience makes it a good choice. If you have some time you can pick a quick game and enjoy or continue a season.
But this will never compares to the real life sport.

8512 of 8669 people found the following review helpful.
Fantastic device – pick your Kindle!
By FreeSpirit
Having been a little overwhelmed by the choices between all the new Kindles and which one to get, I ordered this new basic $79 Kindle first to take for a spin. So far, I like what I see. I also own a Kindle 3 so that’s the only device I can really compare it to at this time (I think a comparison between other tablets and this Kindle is meaningless, this device is all about content and delivery):

1. Form-factor – Compared to the Kindle 3, this Kindle feels more compact, lighter and easier to hold. My hands wrap around this better than K3. Reading books for a few hours at a stretch will be easier on this device compared to the K3. It is the lightest such device I have used compared to all previous Kindles and other tablets.

2. Screen – I personally like the fact that there are no keys on the device and that keys come up on the screen when you need them. Delivers a better overall reading experience. However, navigating through the on-screen keyboard with the 5-way controller can be taxing if you need to do a lot of searching, and you might miss the full physical keyboard. I hardly search on the Kindle itself, I search for books on my laptop so this is a non-issue.

3. Price! – At $79, you can’t go wrong. Compared to buying paperback or hardcover editions, you will recover the cost of this in a matter of a few months because most Kindle content is priced cheaper than print editions (and you get it instantly, and can access it wherever you are). Not to mention all the free Kindle downloads available in the catalog.

4. Display – almost the same E-ink display at the K3. No glare no reflection. You can sit in bright sunlight and read it just like a book. Page turns seem a lot faster on this compared to the K3. Screen size of the Kindle 3, this new Kindle, and the Touch is exactly the same in size.

5. Wi-Fi – this can be a pro or a con (no 3G) depending on a user’s personal preference. If you travel often and would like to be able to download content anywhere without worrying about getting a wi-fi connection, you’re better off sticking with the K3 or waiting for the Touch/Fire. For me, 3G is not a major issue.

6. Text to Speech and Audiobooks – These two features are lacking in this device. I personally have never used these features on my K3. If you listen to audiobooks or TTS or music on your Kindle, again the K3/Touch/Fire might be better options.

7. Storage – this device can store 2GB which they claim is approximately 1400 books. For me, that’s a massive storage capacity and it will be years before I get close to that capacity. Again, if you download books occasionally and have a moderate Kindle downloaded content on your device, 2GB is plenty. Of course, think ahead and see how much you would expect to download in the coming 2 years (I am assuming the device will be outdated and replaced within this time-frame).

8. Battery life – too early to tell but Kindle battery life tends to be great. Specs state that the battery life of this device is 1 month compared to 2 months for the Touch or K3. 1 month is plenty (Android phones need to be charged every hour!). At least I know that if I’m going on a long flight, this device won’t need charging if I charge it up in advance.

9. Power adapter – this Kindle does not come with a power adapter, only a USB charging cable. You can either buy it separately for $8-10, or use your existing USB power adapter. Any USB adapter would work with the charging cable (previous Kindle versions, Apple’s portable devices, and most HTC phones, come with a standard USB power adapter that would work for this device). There are also plenty of $2-3 adapters available here if you search for USB chargers.

Bottom line – the choice between this basic Kindle, the K3 Keyboard, the Touch, and the Fire is really a personal preference. This device itself is meant for the minimalist Kindle user who, like me, reads say a 2-3 books a month, wants a device comfortable to hold, and doesn’t need any fancy bells and whistles on the device. I guess it depends on what you use your Kindle for. If it’s just the basics, this is the perfect device to get.

In my humble opinion, the choices:

(i) If you have a DX or an old Kindle version, or if you don’t have a Kindle yet and are an average book-reader, this is definitely the one to get – baseline model that is affordable and is a pure e-reader.

(ii) If you have Kindle 3 and don’t really need an upgrade, I recommend sticking with the K3, it’s a better device than this one in terms of features. If you do need to upgrade, the Touch is probably a better option because of all the additional features, at a small incremental cost.

(iii) If you’re looking for the loaded full-on Amazon content experience with access to all the apps, streaming audio and video, and playing the “strangely therapeutic” Fruit Ninja, wait for the Fire!

I sincerely hope this review helps you decide whether this Kindle is right for you. If you are still unable to make a decision, it may be worthwhile to wait for the Touch and Fire to be released, and see the reviews on those devices before making a final decision.

Ts
First off, I received my new Kindle this morning. I previously owned the Kindle Keyboard, but actually really didn’t like the keyboard or the way the buttons were pressed together. I’m not a fan of touch screens so I bought this one.

There are a few things to know about this particular Kindle that can help you decide if it’s right for you…

Here is a list of things to know about this Kindle.

1. You’ll be using an onscreen keyboard with the 5-Way Controller. This is not a problem for setting up WiFi and a little writing but if you are an avid note-taker or do a lot of writing with your Kindle, you might want to opt for the Kindle Keyboard.
2. NO AUDIO – If you are planning on listening to audiobooks, Mp3s, or Text to Speech on your Kindle, this is not the device for you. There is not even a headphone jack, so there is absolutely no audio support.
3. 2GB! This device has 2GB of storage, which is half of all the others… if you seriously need to keep over 1,400 books or so on your Kindle, you should opt for one of the others, all of which have 4GB. I only keep a hundred or so books on mine and the rest are up in the Amazon Cloud waiting for convenient download.
4. There’s no 3G version but the WiFi works just fine.
5. There is a shorter battery life. Amazon reports the battery life is only one month of reading, compared with the others that clock in at two months. If you are going to be away from electricity for over a month, first of all RESPECT!, second of all, you may want a Kindle that has the 2 month battery life.
6. It’s lighter than all the other versions. It weighs in at just under 6oz (170g). The closest competition is the Kindle Touch which is about 7.5oz.
7. It has 5 buttons on the face at the bottom. In the middle is the big 5-Way Controller button as found on other Kindles. There are two small buttons on either side of this. On the left side, from left to right are the “Back” button and the “Keyboard” button. The “Back” button is the same as on other Kindles. The “Keyboard” button calls the onscreen keyboard onto the screen. On the right side of the 5-Way Controller are (again, from left to right) the “Menu” button, and the “Home” button. The “Next Page” and “Previous Page” buttons are the same as on other Kindles.
8. Because of the above 5 buttons, I find it much easier to use than the Kindle Keyboard. On the Kindle Keyboard, the “Back” button was right below the 5-Way Controller, and I accidentally hit it on more than one occasion.
9. On the bottom there is only the mini-USB port, the charging light, and the On-Off Button.
10. There are not a whole lot of covers available for this Kindle yet. (Amazon’s won’t be available until the end of October.)

As for reading, and as a pure reading device. It is awesome… in fact, without the keyboard, audio, and other features I don’t need. This is actually the best one for someone like me who just wants to read.

I’ve already successfully transferred my library, downloaded books over WiFi, and borrowed library books through the Overdrive Library eBooks System. My only small point of dissatisfaction is that there are so few good covers and accessories right now (though there ARE some available that look pretty good).

All in all, I believe this is the BEST of all the Kindles currently available. Only consider others if you:
a. Really want the touch screen version.
b. Need audio.
c. Need 4GB
d. Need a big Kindle DX.
e. Take a lot of notes or do a lot of writing that requires a keyboard.
f. Prefer the design of another version.
g. Need more than a month’s battery power.

Hope this helps someone make a good decision!

(Brief update: I love this Kindle, but right now the scarcity of good, inexpensive covers for it is a little troubling. The Amazon made leather one with light won’t be available until November or so and there are currently no inexpensive ones to use in the interim. I’ll just have to use it gently for a month or so.)

Update on cases:
I mentioned this in the comments section, but I’ll repeat it here for people who can’t yet find a good case -

Checking the specifications for the Kindle, Nook Touch, and Kobo:
Nook Touch
6.5 x 5 x 0.5 inches
Kobo Reader
6.5 X 4.5 inches
Kindle (4th Generation)
6.5 x 4.5 x 0.34 inches

It looks like the Kobo is about exactly the same size and the Nook Touch is slightly longer. If you need a case but can’t find one that you like yet, it may be worth a little hunting to see if a nook or kobo case or cover might fit the bill.

Extremely legible display, snappy performance
By M. Erb
Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/RWG7OQ5NMGUMW I was thrilled to receive my new Kindle. I ordered it Sep 28, chose overnight shipping and it arrived (Sep 29) just a few minutes ago. Usually I use a device for a while before reviewing it. In this case, I felt it was important to do a quick review right away because if it can help you in your purchasing decision, so much the better.

If you are a little perplexed with all the various Kindle models and are wondering if this Is the Kindle for you, here are a few questions for you to consider…

1. Do you need text to speech capability or have the desire to listen to mp3′s on your Kindle? If you can live without that, then proceed. This Kindle does not have a speaker thus is not capable of text to speech or playing sounds of any kind including mp3′s.

2. Is color important to you? This is not a color Kindle, it is gray-scale. If you are mostly wanting to read books then this will work for you exceedingly well. The e-ink screen is gorgeous, sharp and provides the ability to change font size, font face and line spacing. It even displays photos quite nicely, but in gray-scale. And you can even zoom in on images.

3. Is a physical keyboard a necessity for you? If you like to make notes and annotations while reading, you may want to look at another model Kindle that has a physical keyboard. Although this Kindle has a screen-based keyboard, it is tedious to type more than a few words or URL’s. It works very well for minimal typing but it’s not for you if you need more than that.

4. Is compact size important for you? Then this is the one to get. It’s thin, light and diminutive in size. Slips easily into a purse, pocket or inside pocket. It is so light which makes holding and reading with one hand for longer periods of time very easy.

5. Do you want to be able to occasionally use a web browser to access a web site? Well surprise surprise, you can do that on this Kindle. It’s an “experimental” feature but it works quite well. It’s been experimental for years, so I’m not quite sure why it’s still labeled experimental. But in any case you can visit websites, save bookmarks and it works.

I also own the original Kindle with the SD card slot. Compared to the original Kindle, this new one is svelte. Thinner, lighter and notably, the e-ink on this new Kindle is vastly improved. In low interior lighting with gray overcast lighting outside, I’m able to easily read the Kindle. It is amazing how the screen almost glows, as if it were backlit. Of course it is not backlit and in fact will not work in the dark. But if you have a small reading light, that solves that problem. Otherwise in most other situations you will pleased with the excellent sharpness and clarity of the Kindle text.

Page “turning” was very snappy to me especially when compared to my old Kindle. The black page flash that occurs on every page turn on the old Kindle does not occur nearly as frequently with the new Kindle. It now occurs after every 5 page turns.

The fact that there is no physical keyboard means that this Kindle is absolutely the easiest to carry Kindle ever. Fits nicely in the hand and the slightly grippy surface makes you feel secure in holding it… it will not easily slip out of your hand.

Setup was a breeze. The Kindle immediately identified my Wi-Fi network and as soon as I entered my password using the onscreen keyboard, I was good to go. Signal strength indicated very high on the Kindle and I did not notice any degradation in signal no matter how I handled it.

As concerns the onscreen keyboard, it was easy and intuitive to use. I don’t expect to have to use it very often and for me I’d rather have no physical keyboard because that makes the Kindle smaller and easier to pack and go.

You still get the typical Kindle tools, such as Highlighting, Notes, Annotations, Public Notes and a few others. You can upload PDF and TXT files and view them. You can easily transfer prior Kindle purchases to your new Kindle. You have the ability to create “collections” Once you’ve created a collection, you add items to it and this is a great way to organize many books.

I have not had this model long enough to comment on battery life, but I’m sure that based on my previous Kindle and the specifications that it will excel. I believe that reading 1/2 hour a day will let you go a month before needing a charge if Wi-Fi is off. That’s pretty awesome. It is charged via the included USB cable and that can be from your computer or via an AC to USB power adapter, or in-car power port USB adapter.

And don’t worry that the memory has decreased in this Kindle. There is still more than enough memory to hold well over 1000 books. And you archive books too which means they are just a click and a few seconds away from being downloaded back to your Kindle from the Amazon Cloud.

Regarding the ads… they are not objectionable. In fact (don’t tell this to the advertisers) I didn’t even notice that there was an advertisement on the home screen until I deliberately looked for it. It takes up just a small portion of the bottom of the screen and is no taller than an inch in height. I don’t know for sure whether all ads are the same size but the one I’m looking at is very unobtrusive. The screensaver ads are full page and don’t bother me at all. And of course, you may just end up getting a good deal on something. I LIKE the ads. Just today I got a couple from an ad that saves me $5 on a $10 Amazon purchase in addition to my choice of a selected list of Mystery/Thriller books for only $1. Love the deals!

I think Amazon has another winner on its hands with this ad-supported Kindle. You just can’t beat it for reading and I’m so glad I got it.

If you have any questions please leave a comment and I’ll do my best to answer them.

UPDATE: 10/16/2011 – I had the opportunity to compare the display of my new Kindle with that of a friends who had a Kindle with keyboard. I’m not sure how old his is, but his display actually had a somewhat lighter colored background which made the legibility slightly better in my opinion. I was quite happy with the clarity, sharpness and contrast of my new Kindle until I compared with him. Now I’m a little conflicted. It’s still great, don’t get me wrong, But it’s not an improvement necessarily over the previous generation as far as I can tell. It’s also possible that there are variations in the e-ink display depending on the luck of the draw. I may question Amazon about this and will report back here if I do. I’d still get this in a heartbeat, but just wanted to let you know about the contrast issue.

UPDATE: 10/17/2011 – There is a new firmware update for the Kindle that addresses the page refresh issue. The new version is 4.0.1 If installed, you will see an additional option in the Settings panel on page 3 called “Page Refresh.” This allows you to have the Kindle refresh the page at each page turn (the screen flashes black briefly.) Otherwise the Kindle will not refresh the page until after each 5 page turns.

UPDATE: 10/19/2011 – I called Amazon Kindle Support to discuss the screen darkness issue I mentioned above. They said they’d send a replacement which I’ve just received. I’m happy to say that the screen background is in fact -slightly- lighter in color on the new Kindle I just received. I’m happy and probably would have still been happy had I not replaced it. But at least I am psychologically satisfied now. The difference in background color was extremely subtle so I wouldn’t worry at all about it if you are happy with your newly purchased $79 Kindle. However there do seem to be some circulating that are more obviously darker and if yours is one of those, then contact Amazon.

UPDATE: 12/6/2011 – Wow, the way these specials offers are going, this Kindle is going to end up being free. I just got another $10 Amazon gift card for $5 the other day. Plus a free Audible Audiobook and 50% off a Kindle cover. Loving the special offers.
