First there was the Dualshock, then the all powerful Dualshock 2 but then the PS3 was staged with the Sixaxis and the Dualshock 3 was nowhere to be seen. This was due to a legal dispute amid Immersion and Sony concerning the rights to the ‘rumble’ feature the result of which meant that the Dualshock 3 was put on hold when the PlayStation 3 was launched in 2006. Normal service has now been resumed with the release of the Dualshock 3 controller on July 4th2008 (this was the UK release date which came a few months after the US and Japanese launch), and yes it features the all crucial rumble feature though in a more or less milder form than on the Dualshock 2, this may be an crusade to preserve the wireless controllers battery life. Aside from this major divergence you will find other subtle modifications such as a more solid black casing, a 40% increase in weight providing a more sturdy construction, this is due to the addition of the two rumble packs installed into the right and left palms of the unit. But actually apart from the capacity to rumble there is not too much difference amongst the Sixaxisis and the Dualshock 3 so the key issue remains how much do you think you are missing by not having the rumble feature when you are playing your favourite action games. It’s not a buy you need to rush out and buy but it is a superior controller and if you haven’t got one already you’ll end up with one in the end -right? |
