Everything is smooth, the colors are rich, and the effects really catch my eye. The Asgard stage at night is one of the most beautiful I’ve ever seen in a fighting game. The comic-book style of the characters kind of leaves them without as much detail as you would see in a game like Tekken 6 or Virtua Fighter 5, but this game was never trying to go for photorealism. They fit well with the whole graphical style. Sound: I must admit, I was one of the few who seemed to really love the jazzy tunes of Marvel vs Capcom 2. I missed them as I played this game, but its own soundtrack quickly grew on me. Lots of the themes are pumping action tracks, but each one is distinct and wonderful. The Hand Hideout theme especially drew me in, creating a dark, almost meditative atmosphere. All the sound effects are nice as well! It gives a satisfying “smack” sound when you hit an opponent. All of the characters are voiced and have quite a few different lines, which I honestly didn’t expect. Gameplay: This is where the game really won me over. It has all the frantic, fast-paced fighting of Marvel vs Capcom 2, with lots of significant tweaks and improvements. It’s accessible, too. Even if you’re just a beginner, you can quickly learn to start pulling off moves and simple combos. But there’s plenty for experienced fighting fans, too. Huge combos, lots of different character types, super combos, assists. The game may first seem like a button-masher, but give it a chance and you’ll see how deep it is. As I said, the game has lots of glitz and goes at a quick pace. If you’re more into slower-paced games like Virtua Fighter, it may take some time getting used to how frantic a match can be. But you’ll be glad you did. Overall: This has definitely earned its place as one of the best fighting games of this console generation. Incredible graphics, lots of characters, a great soundtrack, and crazy gameplay all add up to an amazing experience. I’ve been obsessed with Virtua Fighter 5 lately, but the release of this game was finally enough to pull me away from it. In within this assortment I found a few that were so intuitive, (meaning no special learning curve required.) that I managed to kick ass online during first use of characters such as Vegil, Nemmy and Hawkeye. However,Marvexploitation (Marvel 70′s characters) such as Nova, Iron Fist and Ghost Rider may require a little practice. The gameplay is somewhat tweaked in terms of balance,but the game is basically the same and that’s a good thing. I noticed the additional new colors for the fighters, that range from cool, (Black Nova, Both Ghost Rider and She Hulk sporting Fantastic Four Logos, Bucky Captain America)whimsical (Dante and Vergil “Color swap” African American Iron Fist) to downright perplexing. (Blue Hulk,White Nemises,etc.) But all in all, it adds more variety to the roster and the special pre-order costumes are a bonus. What’s also great is that the themes for the characters have not changed. I could never tire of “winds of Madness” which is wesker’s theme from RE5 and Taskmaster’s theme just keeps me inspired during the heat of battle. For the most part, the music is a remix from the previous MVC games. My only complaint is regardless of the 36 characters, some decisions are questionable and not to mention the omission of Marvel Icons like Daredevil, Punisher (well at least you get to “play” as him when you select Captain America)Blade, (WTF, you can have Dante the demon slayer but not Blade the vampire hunter??/!!?)Black Panther, or even Capcom side like Jedah from Darkstalkers, Hunk or Leon from RE,The guy from Onimusha, Regina from Dino Crisis and of course the original fighting robot Megaman. (Zero’s cool, but there just ain’t no substitute for the classic MM.) All in all, a very satisfying and tactical fighter without the need for over the top blood n guts. (Yes I’m looking at you Mortal Kombat 9!!) From two legendary Companies,comes a top contender for fighting game of the year. Excelsior! |
