5Excellent stick
By Mikhail Fridman
I was looking to get into using an arcade joystick for Super Street Fighter 4; all I played on before was the 360 controller and the madcatz fightpad.

I wasn’t that familiar with manufacturers of stick parts but I hear Sanwa makes the best and this stick comes with everything Sanwa. The design is bulky and overall this stick is much larger than I expected. This is by no means a downside as the extra elevation is very comfortable especially if you’re just playing on your lap. The buttons are very responsive, with the concave design making it feel like I’m hitting the button before I’m hitting the button: very cool. The joystick is a little weird because of the square gate, which is a little bit of a bizzare transition from controllers. I got used to it in roughly two weeks of maybe 10 hours of play total so not too bad at all. As the pictures show there’s a lot of extra room on the left of the stick which, depending on your grip, can make manipulating the stick very comfortable.

There are turbo buttons on top and it’s easy to turn on turbo with the little switch for every button individually. Turbo throws me off, personally, but the feature is great if you’re into that. The Start button off to the right is kinda weird… Why isn’t it at the top with the Dashboard and Back buttons? Depending on how you position or move your hand you might trip the Start button accidentally. Only happened to me twice in the 2 months I’ve had this, but still not a good place for that button to be.

In conclusion if you’re looking to get a new stick, this one is superb, and usually sells for cheaper than the Madcatz TE even though they use the same parts.

5Amazing. A+++ Quality Great Stick!
By Sean
I’ve used all kinds of arcade sticks including the TE. But since TE is pretty much the standard, i’ll use it as comparison. Both sticks use all Sanwa Parts which are very high quality. The whole arcade stick itself is huge and much longer than the TE. It’s about 2.5lbs lighter I believe but still very sturdy and stays on your lap fine. Buttons are a little closer to the stick than the TE, which doesn’t seem like a huge difference when transitioning from stick to stick. The response is awesome and is very solid and durable. I’ve actually dropped it a couple of times and its still like new. Great stick. Would recommend. A++++

4Amazing controller for PC & Xbox360
By /dev/null
This arcade stick is physically perfect, it feels great, the buttons and stick are all A++ arcade quality parts, very solid to hold and I like the grips on the sides of the stick.

I was not prepared for how large this thing is! That’s not a bad thing at all, by any means.. like I said it feels great, even for extended durations of game play. This controller works perfectly with PC gaming as well as 360 gaming. Response time is instantaneous, games feel like they should with an arcade quality control panel like this. In windows (only tested with XP) it works great with the standard 360 controller drivers for windows or 3rd party XBCD drivers. (though it takes a bit of work to get this to register with the latter, I only use XBCD drivers so I can remap the triggers on the standard 360 controller as buttons and not analog x/y axis, which is not changeable in Microsoft’s drivers)

I only gave the stick 4 stars because of intrinsic problems with how Xbox 360 controllers (and arcade sticks) work with windows. If you have a USB microphone or headset and then plug a Xbox630 controller in, your headset/microphone will start to glitch out, creating massive amounts of distortion in the audio. The worst part is that you can’t remedy this by just unplugging the controller, you have to completely restart windows to get the sound back in working order. A true pain in the butt. This happens because of Xbox360 peripheral’s built in headset jack, which forcefully takes over all usb headset/microphone connectivity on your computer until you do a full re-boot. I have only encountered this in Windows XP personally, but if you search on the internet you can find more reports of the same, with a variety of equipment. It’s a shame Microsoft could not write their drivers to live peacefully with other devices you could likely have plugged into your computer, but as of January 2011 it is still an issue.

A 2nd thing that keeps this from getting a perfect 5 stars is the missing selector switch that lets you change the stick to act as the left analog stick, right analog stick, or digital d-pad from the standard 360 controller. Almost every place selling this stick lists that as a selling point, and indeed if you look at the PS3 version, you can clearly see it on there as well, and it’s actually shipped that way. This can make the stick less than compatible for 360 and Xbox Live Arcade games that only use the left analog and not the d-pad. This stick solely emulates the 360 controller’s d-pad and nothing more. Not really a big deal for me as I use it mostly with the PC though, just be aware that the switch that is clearly visible in the pictures (the one with the hand overlaid on the controller) is not present on this version, and only the PS3 edition.

Overall the Real Arcade Pro VX-SA is the best stick I’ve ever used outside of an arcade and besides the minor things I observed in the 2 weeks that I’ve had it, this is spot-on perfect arcade control.

*Highly Recommended* for fans of classic gaming & fighters. Just got done playing Castlevania (Dawn of Sorrow) all the way through with this and it was glorious old school perfection. =)
